The reflection

The most productive piece of my process in making the magazine was that I got the requirements done very soon, helping me with getting other requirements needed to get done latter on. Those “other requirements” are critiquing other peoples work and making my pictures nicer, as well as working on the layout.

I had a hard time making up a decision on which article I was going to choose, my first idea was to make up a paper on what an internship is and what some things to know are before going into an internship would be. Then I changed it to be my photo essay combined with my interview. Then I changed it again to be my interview. Dealing with the extra time I had with finishing up my paper somewhat early, I edited my three pictures I would latter use in my article. My process for the article is somewhat off because the hard drive crashed, so I remade my article on another computer with another group.

My help with other group members was very helpful not to say the least. As I waited for my group to finish with their own article as I was in line to edit my paper, I helped other needing people, both in my group and outside my group. I would switch off of that if I found something to fix on my paper.

Socialist Obama!

While I was going through some articles I found a particularly interesting accusation that I thought was not based on any information besides opinion. But instead I followed a link that was embedded in the article which lead me to a very surprising article. The first article I found was http://www.americanthinker.com/2008/10/why_obamas_socialism_matters_1.html where the main point of the article addresses the history of socialism and how it considered to the point of where we are today starting from the 1920's. Even though I was not quite to interested into falling too off-topic into the interesting facts of Nazi-Germany's Socialist state. But at the top of the article I found this interesting little link that I have been meaning to bring up. This link quickly showed the strange finding of http://politicallydrunk.blogspot.com/2008/10/web-archives-confirm-barack-obama-was.html, which is an article that addressed the fact that Obama used to be involved in the “New Party” which is a “political party established by the Democratic Socialists of America (the DSA) to push forth the socialist principles of the DSA”. Well, very interesting yes? I have more. Further within the article it bring up the fact that the New Party's website deleted an article from October 1996. But it was not deleted from the non-profit organization http://archive.org/ which archives numerous popular websites. Which pulled out a nice little juicy piece of evidence.

“New Party members and supported candidates won 16 of 23 races, including an at-large race for the Little Rock, Ark., City Council, a seat on the county board for Little Rock and the school board for Prince George's County, Md. Chicago is sending the first New Party member to Congress, as Danny Davis, who ran as a Democrat, won an overwhelming 85% victory. New Party member Barack Obama was uncontested for a State Senate seat from Chicago.”

But as the first article went on from that point, it brought up “...To most people, it just means Obama is a more liberal Liberal, or a leftier Lefty, and they already knew that.”

As for the original question of “Do you feel that the label 'socialism' is applied appropriately or correctly to Obama, his proposals or his policies?”, I think Americanized socialism is correctly applied to Obama,but his policies follow a mixture of democratic and solcialism.

My Photoessay

1. What article(s) would you like to write for the magazine? What photography could you contribute? Art? List three different ideas for your major contribution.

For the magazine, the biggest subject I can write about is how SpaWar creates a robot from beginning to end. This is NOT my photo essay, as for I cannot get all the pictures required to show it from paragraph to paragraph. I do not have access to all the sections of the process, it just cant happen to time constraints.
Secondly, I would like to write a paper on an internship how-to explaining the do's and dont's from my point of view.
Thrid, Showing pictures of robots from SpaWar and writing what they do and how they were designed to change Space, Naval, Air, or Land based missions to help the military intelegence and/or save lives.

2. Suggest at least one (or more) possible title for the magazine. This could be a title with or without a subtitle. For example, I work for UnBoxed: a Journal of Adult Learning in Schools.

Immersion!!!

I am most excited that I get to work on robots! I am finishing up the Google Sketch-up designs. I am going to try to finish up the Google Sketch-up so I can get to coding, what I think is the Lego robot, which I have done before, but its always fun to do.
I am also going to help tear apart one of the old robots wiring!

I do not have that much stress about immersion, because I have already done most of this stuff before.

So psyched though for internship, I think it will be amazing!

Outstanding blogs

Looking through various peoples blogs I have seen some pretty cool blogs. We have some pretty well done blogs that deserve to be pointed out.

Diana Barlow has caught my eye when she wrote her six paragraph paper for her economic advice for Obama. She makes the point very clear with both her writing and a nice video at the bottom as a side piece of evidence she found. Her paper started out very simply of what her main objective was, as well as using a quote at the same time. "'Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages'..." using evidence if not once, twice in every paragraph.

Chandler's "Two Cents" for his honors blog was also fascinating as he established his points with page numbers as references to the book as well as quoting it from the book itself. "...he discovers that Daisy has married Tom Buchanan. 'Can't repeat the past?' he cried incredulously. 'Why of course you can!'(Page 116)".

As well as Paul's blog on "things to do on interviews"... he laid out his points in much of an orderly fashion rater than paragraph form. This form of writing is simplistic yes, but is used wisely, it can prove to be sweet and to the point, rather that to read 50 blogs that have block text.

How progressive was the progressive era?

It was not too progressive for the upper class, but it actually benefited the middle class. Which is pretty good due to the gilded age that occurred not to long ago. This era occurred from the massive industrialization period that they were facing, thus demanding reform for social, political, and economic standards. California, Oregon and Wisconsin were notably taking the lead in enforcing these changes at the time.

One big reform was the development of the sixteenth amendment. The sixteenth amendment restricted congress from abusing income tax. Income tax was then changed by requiring an appointment among the states basing it on census results. As for the creation of the seventeenth amendment superseding articles 1 & 3 by forcing either a normal election or special election of the event of one of the two senator seats. This will allow the seat to be open when a leave of absence is in effect with one or more senators. And as well as the nineteenth amendment granting women their rights to vote regardless of their gender. I shouldn't really need to point out what is important about that.

Science + Humanities? Nahh....

It may seem like these Science and Humanities cannot meet, but they are actually very crucial for them to link together. If you take the subject matter in extremes, science would not be able to write down their data if humanities was not involved! But in the more reasonable aspect, we need humanities to get across to people about the discovery or evidence. Science can only go so far before it is just plain useless if it cannot get into the public. With humanities, the subject matter is introduced into the public for viewers to be aware of their findings. But not only that, but humanities also makes the subject more "Human"-istic, whereas the intense scientific words are droned out with more simpler words (or is at least tempted to). It looks like humanities is dragging the load along pretty well huh?

So if we put this in an analogy; We have our materials full of scientific information that is waiting to be shipped to its customers. But before it can be shipped, the materials have to be tested before shipped (this is editing from humanities). Then we have to make sure the product will look applicable to the customers (what audience this article is trying out for, changing the wording to make it simple for children, or complex for college level reading). Eventually Public Relations takes over right about here and actually does the shipping, but I guess you get the point. Without this process, we might be giving information to customers that they do not understand, or is not how they expected it to be.

Throughout the history of the united states, we have had many major events; both good and bad, such as silicon valley and the many wars that took place. Right now we are at the beginning of a major crisis, in which we are currently undergoing a financial recession, which might even become a depression if worse comes to worse. Even though we have our dark hours, we have people that have put aside their glory to fix this problem head on that try their hardest to make it light again. In this case Obama is a major influence to our society, persuading America to join him for his struggle to improve America from the mistakes made by the previous commander in chief. Although I am not even near a professional, if I was appointed into the position to brief president Obama, I would lay down my following key points to what I think would help this economy out of this problem if a bailout is indeed the action that will be taken (which so far it has been). These key points are to keep the money in the right place, jobs have a steady rate, and to ensure a recovery.

All of these steps are equally important and must be treated equally with care, misuse of these will hinder the overall goal of the outcome. So with that note, the first rule I would lay down is a way to track the way that they spend out our money. Even though there is a major risk involved “Congress has failed to put strings on these loans to ensure that banks do not pay extravagant executive bonuses or take expensive retreats.”[1] This unattached sting has been a major problem as the companies that we lend to have no guidelines to be withheld in. So for this problem I suggest an offer to place a government official in their company to manage the money trafficking throughout the company. With this major role shared with the government, there might be some companies skeptical of the government getting this involved with this position of the company. For this problem that will soon to be faced, I believe that the interest in America will greatly appreciate the insurance that we use with companies, no against them, to ensure that they truly are going what they were intending to do with our taxpayers money.

As or the role of keeping companies alive, it is more important that the jobs are sustained with that company. The overall goal is not to save the company from bankruptcy, but overall to freeze layoffs to the slowest possible, and hopefully re-hiring people. “It’s estimated that 11.6 million Americans are currently collecting unemployment, bringing the national unemployment rate to its highest level since 1993.” And this is probably not at its lowest yet. With the strategy that we are not aiming to quickly develop the company into a top hit again, but merely put it back on track to it will be able to sustain and create jobs. With the unemployment rate jumping out windows, it is slowly approaching to be the next depression, although it will not be as catastrophic as the great depression, it will yield parts of America unable to sustain their income to afford the necessities to live in a standard living condition.

As well as getting the jump start to America, It is also important that we also get our funds recovered so we will not be in even bigger massive piles of debt. Even though we can print massive sums of money, it is the value hidden within the currency that makes money septate from everything else in the world. So all these loans brought out from other countries will be expected in around ten years from now. Ten years from now is a significant amount of time, in which we will be out of the ressecion, but the rate of which the companies made after its recovery is still an issue. Our debts are not just forgiving, they are expected back, and in full, one loan or another, the countries will ask for their money back.

Snow in Rancho Bernardo?

It was actually really hard hail, but it looks like snow. It build up on the ground while were in a restaurant. The little snow pellets were floating together and made snowish feel on the ground.
It was pretty cool to see except it was very slippery to get back to the car. Which was pretty bad since we had a grandma with us. I kinda liked the slipping around (mostly because I don't have this every day nor every year). Its a real fluke that we got to witness the snow over here, because we almost went to another place to eat.
On the ground is a pretty large puddle that went in the restaurant a little bit. I guess that the irrigation was stuck with all the snow it had to power down. The "snow" that you see in the picture was about 20 of hail. About 20 minutes later we went to get our car in the hail, which was quite cumbersome since we had to walk up steps covered with ice. The cars we passed by were covered in ice on some part of it... It was pretty awesome!

What would happen if I talked to Obama about Economic Matters?

Well, I would highly doubt that I would ever get that position at this rate, but if I did, I would mention these topics.

* ensure that the money will be put into the right areas of the company
* ensure that jobs have a good chance of slowing their layoff rates because of it.
* ensure that the money has a majority of recovery.

with these basic principles, I believe that the government can if not cure it, make it better than its current status...

First Day at Internship

Hey, today was the first day at the cool SpaWar internship! First of SpaWar stands for Space and Naval Warfare, and the division I was interning at was the robotics division. There are numerous extensions and zones to SpaWar, mine was at the military base on the peninsula, in which the navy owns. My section was far passed the inactive gates (tricky huh? We didn't know we could go passed them until we called our mentor up). Like one mile out, we turned right into a working gate system with guards. When we finally finished telling the guards why were here, my mentor showed up (IN A PORCH). That was a surprise, he greeted me and my mom as the rest of the carpool was waiting in the car. My mom asked him about some stuff for directions about the other carpool people. We rode down the gates turned right (which pretty much stretched around to where we started at the nonoperational gates). I'm guessing they could get us to go down there since that's where they do some of their testing. I was shown around, saw some of the testing areas, the tethered testing pads and the wireless testing pads [tethered is wired debugging, just to make sure nothing crazy happens]. After that I finally arrived at the small encampment.

The building on the place mark is the building that I work in (im on floor 2) the building right beside that is my replacement mentor (since he is on a trip), as well as Robin Laird, my real mentor. The building south of the placemark is the shed for all the gigantic crazy cool classified robots. I could tell you, but Obama's no torture rule will take some time to enforce before were through with you. Even further south, wait you'll almost miss it! That's where the volleyball court is, on Tuesdays and Thursdays they will play there a little bit! North and south of us is all testing grounds. North is vehicles, and south are UAV's. We also will have a turret with an M18 fire at unauthorized personnel in development [it is currently equipped with air-soft] and is also stored in the storage.

My temporary mentor was pretty easy going, he showed me around, showed me his crowded cubicle. Showed me his stash of perfectly aligned used coke-a-cola bottles on his desk (I thought was pretty funny). I was showed some testing robots that people use around here. Unfortunately my real mentor wasn't there so explain exactly what I am doing, so I was given directions to research knowledge about Google earth in which I may be using. Throughout the many hours of me being there and past me setting up my 15 character super password. I was sitting at my desk researching about Google Earth's xml based language. Which I hope to get to some real programming sooner or later. But after that was done, I was asked to go out to the pavement outside to go ride around on the Segway! It was very nice, it was modded by SpaWar to have their own settings in it. It was very easy to understand how to use. After riding that around for a while, I went up the path to see my ride home. Instead of just seeing my mom, I was also very surprised to see that my grandma was in the car waiting... It was very interesting to go there, and I'm glad it wasn't my last visit.

Eisenhower

The military-industrial complex have been getting close to the Military. This power is dangerous to the country as it will give speed to choices for going to war. When too much war materials are being made, it only makes scene that we have to use them somehow. Eisenhower's farewell address was a warning to this issue stating that when these two forces combine, their will be a massive confrontation possibly leading to the starting of world war three. This warning was indeed spoken in 1961, but this conflict is still going on today.
On that day of Eisenhower's farewell address to his fellow Americans, he gives out a warning of imminent danger for whomever takes his his place, in this case the next president was John F Kennedy. Within his statement to the nation, he addressed that “American makers of plowshares could, with time and as required, make swords as well. But now we can no longer risk emergency improvisation of national defense; we have been compelled to create a permanent armaments industry of vast proportions.” In this statement he has brought in the argument of the “threats, new in kind or degree”. These threats are indeed the new industrial military complex, which at the time is pretty new as the united states felt the need to enforce permanent war factories from the past experiences that have proved fatal on December seventh.
With these new factories, we have fixed the national security matter with a surprise attack, but it also creates a reverse affect in the long run where as professor Randell Scherer said that its like “If I buy paints at the beginning of the semester, we are going to have a painting project.” The constant access of war supplies have not just protected us, but it is also a big reason why many theorists call this war profiteering as an endless market of war supplies will always be in business as the united states has been in constant conflict since world war two. That's a major marketing advantage since they see the trend going higher and higher, they can safely assume that their market is still going to be there.
With that said, Eisenhower's warning indeed was a very wise warning to send out to the American people that is still being referenced today. Although that speech was spoken in 1961, the military industrial complex have been a profiteering company in the eyes in multiple theorists. The theories might be a little far fetched to grasp but a lot of it makes sense, wither it is real or not.

Its time for US to evolve into the Obamanation!

As he went through one of his epic speeches, I heard the line "We do not look at what you can destroy, but what you can create." This line resonated to me simply because it was funny on how simple it was but yet it was true. We should not look at what other countries can destroy, but what they can create is a good point, the moral outcome for war is usually attempting to gain additional peace. When we try to ally with other counties, we might look at what they can destroy, but unless it is a wartime, we mostly look at what the country can create. If the country is very destructive and very ill-equipped with building, then the odds of being in the alliance is very low.

This comment applies to everyday life as we see at least something about the war in iraq and how destructive it is. So when we look at iraq now and see its potential, it is a lot less likly to be one of our allies. Especially now that we are at war with them. But there is always a chance for a country to regain their grounds, look at Germany. Germany suffered from a great depression where bread cost 1 billion German Marks, they went to war with us too, but still fifty years later we are allies with them. And that is because they have put more production to builing instead of demolition.

1. My thesis statement will be somewhat along the lines of "The blood and gore of today reality has been mixed in with games to morph into a different perspective." the connection with the WW2 icon and the twisted reality of the "boom, head shot" quote from Halo to show what a twisted reality games have made events.

2. evidence will be easy to get for this one, as I have ALWAYS forgotten to put that in. And there are a lot of citations and possible interviews of people from this battle. The body will explain how far games have gone that have warped sense of the real battlefield.

3. Conclusion, there are some games that are realistic. Believe it or not, Call of Duty 4 realistically layed out the entire city of Chernobyl, down to the fairs wheel. But other games such as Halo and Eagle Eye are not real.

Future Internship Goals

1. I plan on finding out what the work environment really like, since there are a lot of stories of good and bad jobs (especially showed on "dirty jobs") it sure would be good to know what my programming type internship will be. I doubt that i would change my mind either way, but it is still good to know what your getting into for when I do apply for such a job.

2. I hope to find out that I can explore more sectors of my ability. Not just in programming, but in organizational skills in balancing my workload with a consistent method getting my work done with up-most quality as well as being on-time or even early for testing/critiques.

3. My goals for internship is to get tips on what to do or do things better for when I get a job, or in my academic life. There might not be life lessons, but their will defiantly be trial and error with things to do and not to do in the business world. And also as important as doing good, making it good for me is almost as important; making projects interesting is what makes customers more interested in the product. And it also makes the experience like it is feel less of a burden, but instead a fun activity.
